Surrounding Area
The Monastery of St. John is 15 km NE of Nafpaktos near the mountain village of Vomvokou on the eastern slope of Mount Riganion.
To the West it is surrounded by lush vegetation, including planes, and streams, whereas to the South by Mornos plain, the sea and the mountains of the Peloponnese.
The Monastery was founded on the site of an ancient settlement as testified by the sole surviving white marble funerary stele featuring letters of the 2nd century AD. Not only does it constitute one of the oldest monasteries of the Holy Metropolis of Nafpaktos and St Vlassios but also a listed monument of great architectural and iconographic interest.
The destruction of the settlements, which still exists today on the periphery, and the archeological findings coming to light from time to time, only vaguely reflect the history of the land.
